Came to see where Indiana Jones went in the movie. Too bad the inside isn't the same ;).

I've been waiting to see the spot where Indiana Jones (and Brody of course) began their quest for the Holy Grail. Ever since seeing that movie brand new in the theaters, I've always wanted to stand in the same spot. My ten year old son and I even got matching authentic WWII surplus satchels (the British MkVII from Magnoli if I remember right) so we could feel as authentic as possible.
All of this buildup was fun but, in the end, it's a large plaza that a neat movie was shot in 30+ years ago. The church itself has been turned into some sort of DaVinci museum, which we decided to skip. Lots of food in the area (no, the outdoor cafe pictured in The Lost Crusade isn't real nor is the manhole covering Indy popped out of).
It's still beautiful and it still made my own and a ten year old's dream come true. -

This is a small campo; but, it is a lively one. The Campo has been featured in many movies including Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where the deconsecrated Church of San Barnaba played a library with a secret route to imaginary catacombs. There is a lovely canal that runs along one side where you can see the working boats coming and going. You should not miss the Grom gelateria that faces the campo.

With so much to see & do in Italy, so many ancient & modern temptations to lure your attention this way & that, things can get lost in the shuffle. And this being Venice, with its countless narrow & twisting streets, I could get lost just about anywhere. So, I felt it was important to prepare for my recent trip & what better way to prepare than watch an authoritative documentary on this ancient city like Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade?
Venice was used as a filming location for a number of scenes in the early portion of the film, after Indiana Jones learns his father has been kidnapped & travels with Marcus Brody to search for him. Doges Palace, the Bridge of Sighs & here, the Chiesa di San Barnaba, which serves as the exterior of the library where "X marks the spot," are among the locations used.
Currently, the interior of the church is being used to host an exhibition on Da Vinci. It's not exactly amazing, but worth a look if you have the time.
